About Sheriff Steve Miera

A Taos native and graduate of Taos High School, Sheriff Steve Miera has dedicated his life to the service of his community and his country. Following his graduation, Steve built a foundation of discipline and integrity in the United States Marine Corps. After being honorably discharged, he returned home to New Mexico, bringing with him the core values that have guided his distinguished career in local law enforcement. Over the next three decades, Steve earned his way through every level of the department—serving as a Deputy, Sergeant, and Lieutenant—developing a ‘boots-on-the-ground’ understanding of the unique challenges facing Taos County families.

Steve’s deep operational experience and proven track record led to his appointment as Undersheriff, a role he held for eight years before being sworn in as your Sheriff. Over the last three years, he has remained focused on modernizing the department while maintaining the traditional values of Northern New Mexico. Today, Steve continues to lead the Taos County Sheriff’s Office with the same transparency and accountability he promised on day one, ensuring the department remains a professional, proactive force for public safety.

Winter Resilience: The Senior Safe Wood Program

Under our Sheriff Miera’s leadership, the Taos County Sheriff’s Office continues to prioritize our seniors through the Senior Safe Wood Program. Now in its seventh year, this annual initiative provides processed firewood to local seniors in need, ensuring our most vulnerable neighbors stay warm and safe throughout the harsh winter months.

In a proud partnership with the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, Sheriff Miera has expanded the Youth Hunter Safety Program to ensure the next generation of Taos hunters is equipped with the skills, ethics, and safety knowledge they need.
